Tournament of Castille

Some of the guards have found some chests open with no one attending them. Under Castillian law section 29584329582.124 Article 4B, this is property to the crown. They have gathered them up. Some of the items found were worth, well, a fortune!

So naturally King Wend and I blew all the money buying up ingredients and for the forging of truly legendary items. After facing much criticism for this, we have decided to give the items away as prizes in a brilliant move of political acumen under a "Sharing the wealth scheme." We got the money from the public, and so back to the public it goes.

Of course, the wealth isn't really shared among everyone. It will go to a select few individuals who entertain us the most! Ahhh, the greatness of court life...

And so I am proud to announce, The Castille Tournament.

When: when you are available (can't beat that).
Where: Isle of Fredian, any location in game.

Here is how it works. The contest coordinator, me, or the clerk of Castille, shall acquire contestants from whatever they are doing using diabolical means and have them do their duels. The tournament is expected to span a month (IRL). Other DMs may help in this task, but only when I ask them too .. And of course, if they are willing and have the time

This is an IC event! You must be In Character while in umm.. combat. If you wish to discuss the event with other players, please do so in IC. As with any plot, players can determine how it ends and it may not happen necessary in the arena, but under the table.... It will be interesting to see what happens. Of course, although the clerk is near deaf, do not allow him to hear about any of your misdoings should you be involved in any, or you could be excluded from the contest (as an IC action of Mr. Hald).


You can win more than one category. Everyone must participate in Most Versatile, since that is sort of the battle for the cup kind of thing. Prize is a genesis ring. Only one max per person, so winning extra categories is just more gloating rights. From an IC point of view, your character may have an aptitude for glowing in the additional fame.

Categories:

Most Versatile
(essentially has the most "wins" for the fights. Can beat up the most builds).

Best Caster
(best caster vs. caster dueling. A cleric can enroll only if they put away their weapon. Same for a druid, etc..)

Best Grunt
(Must be a melee weapon, no archers. Bard/Ranger/Paladin/Cleric/Druid buffs are ok, and you can have smiters, but if a cleric or druid wants ot participate they can only buff (no heal/harm/offense magic). Divine Favor and Divine Power etc.. OK. Dispel magic is legal, even if it is with a wand. Classes who want to use offensive magic should consider Best Caster, Fastest Killer, or Most Versatile. This is for the grunts!)

Fastest Killer
(for each win you have, the time it took you to win will be recorded. All your times will be added together and divided by the number of wins (hence, an average). The person who kills the fastest is the Fastest Killer. You have to have more than 4 wins to be eligible*. Killing 1 guy really quick and losing the rest does not make you the Fastest Killer
* = may change with the number of people who show. Can go up or down.

Enrollees who cannot do their fights over an extended period of time not because of login schedules (I could ask someone else to catch them for me), but due to inactivity or refusal to do their fight when offered the chance, may forfeit their positions.

Other DM Events! I will be respectful of them. If you are on a DM event with another member of our staff, tell me so if I ask you to do your rounds. This is the only thing you wouldn't be penalized for You can ask to do it later for any reason, but then its gambling- if I can't catch you later then it may result in your forfeit. It may not if we are lucky enough to do your rounds later. But if you are on another DM event, I won't forfeit you for being unavailable.

You may PM me or post here to enroll. Please post here if there are questions (so I can answer them for everyone in my reply) about contest rules or one of the event categories.

Scoreboard!

I will keep score of who beats who and other statistics of the battles and post them to the forums in this thread, so you can see who is closest to the cup, or how many challenges left remain for you to get something. I will also shout them ocassionally on-line, within reason.

I want to start in June. I'd like to use the rest of this month to collect names and get a list of contestants.

There is no cap on the amount of people who may enroll due to the spread out nature of the event (we wouldn't incur troubles w/ too many people in the same place).


Update: no heal potions and greater restoration scrolls, but other scrolls/buffs are allowed, including offensive scrolls.

Update: Each contestant has 90 seconds to prepare before their battle.

Update: No Greater Sanctuary or sanctuary scrolls / cloak. Casters may still cast.

I think everyone is wanting to enter the fastest and most versatile classes. It's just a matter of what you are; a fighter or caster. You generally can't be both.

TheNaga, well I guess you could -try- to enter both, but you are likely more a caster, or fighter.
If you enter the other class you will get creamed. IE if you just have some Wiz and PM, you won't have the spells to kill a real caster. If you have just a few fighter levels, you won't have the AB to go toe to toe with a real fighter.

I wouldn't mind seeing a ranged category (not all ranged characters shoot arrows ).

edit: to expand on serpitus's Qs, can the grunt class use offensive spells (harm), or just buffs, or none?

My questions have been asked already but anyway... can fighters use scrolls for this? If so, which ones? (buffs only?)
Do we start the fight with no buffs? (That would be the best for grunts I think, after all it's a fighter match.. not casters)

This hasn't been asked yet I think: Can players use items that are no longer available in the world? If knights are going to be in it, do they have special gear?

Enrollment. Really the only "choices" people get are grunt/caster (you have to opt in if you are going to use a fighting style *different* than you would in versatile). fastest is an offshoot of versatile. It is essentially people who are participating in versatile who are doing it the fastest, so even if they don't win the champ they can steal the category for being the most brutally efficient killer.

A person can win grunt from "grunt fights" that occurred within the larger contest, or when two mages pair up, it can count as a "caster fight" towards best caster.

It is when if you say you are going to fight with your staff in versatile and want to use magic for best caster, then I have you do extra fights for each and score them differently. This is especially pointful for clerics who can swing and cast with some effectiveness.

Archers are very effective chars and may place high in versaility competitions (although imho are unlikely to win them altough they can get close). Run and shoot techniques will definitely disqualify them for fastest but it may take them to the top. I'll open an archer's section if we can get minimum 5 archers for it. Slings OK too.

Undecisive person (crunch): Just post when you can finally decide. I can't go off your username other than to identify you, but I still need to know what you're going to do battle with. You have plenty of time. Think it over. The contest isn't starting for awhile.

buffs, scrolls, wands, tricks and traps, heal potions:

My decision on this has a huge effect on the meaning of the contest. If I allowed these things, it would be a shift from best build to best person meaning that person may have had the longivity and presence on the server to acquire the means to win, even in the face of a stronger "build" of character. Yet, a build is always relative to the type of equipment seen on a server and varies from world to world (this is very obvious when reading char build threads on the Bioware forums that encompass people from all kinds of servers), and those who can't get access to craftables or are non-crafters may already be sititng at a disadvantage. Thus, it already is more geared to the person than it is to the build, within an extent.

Because of the IC nature of the tourney, this is dealing with individual people and their reputations on the Island. I am going to have to say they are all legal except the heal potions and greater restoration scrolls, but you can cast it if you are a casting class. For most things, no matter how effective, you give up a round to use them even if it is tide of battle or whatever, and your opponent may get a few swings in or spells off or whatever in the round it took you read the scroll. But with healing, you lose a round and get many more rounds back in return. And clerics/druids, at least, in theory have a concentration check they have to make, and for their spell casting abilities usually don't take advantage of things like disarm, for example, or some other stats would suffer very badly to make it so. They have equalizers, where properly exploited. So, for all the complaints and recriminations, casting heals are OK, but no potions/scrolls. Buffs and other scrolls (including summons): Anything goes!

Losses: They don't count against you, its just your lack of wins that hurts the most. Losses will be tracked though for statistical purposes.

Time to prepare: Each contestant will get 90 seconds before their fight starts to buff.

OK, i've decided to enroll my fighter "Samin Allian" in the grunt fights, and any other fights I can be in. Also I didn't see an answer to these questions:
Can players use items that are no longer available in the world?

BTW, you said using scrolls etc.. just shows who has the best items or been around the longest, not the best build, but then you say oh well use them all anyway? Doesn't make sense to me but i'll go with it.

CrunchX, knights do not have special gear.
Any item that is worn on a characters body that can be acquired through any means necessary, even if it is pickpocketed from the enemy contestant in the middle of melee, outdated, indated, whatever, is legal. In several cases, newer items are stronger than older ones. Most relics of concern will not affect the grunt/melee duels. I think some IGMS spammers might hit some problems here and there, but none enrolled to date are people known to possess relic gear on those characters.

I think it will be fair enough for you in a game balance sense.

Remember, since it is an IC event, players can do all sorts of foul play in the way of deals, shady moves, throwing a fight, etc.. I think few are motivated to do so, but I'm opening up the table to play chess, not checkers. The tourney is not necessarily limited to the combat dimension.

Perhaps you should "rent" certain hard to find items for the event. Ironically, most people who have them have not enrolled yet. I am sure that Hooded guy or Frost or that Mackenzie dude might have some lying around....

Of course Mr. Hald wants no funny business in the stands
