I am going to want some armor modified & dyed because what I use looks horrid. How much would I expect this to cost? I tried to do it in the OC to get a feel for it, but didn't see any way to. Either I'm missing something obvious, or it's a server-specific option. At any rate, I have no idea what it entails.
Sooooo, I'm going to need a bit of info before I even decide how it should look. Here's what I want to know:
1)cost, obviously (item level around 16 if that matters)
2)limitations--specifically whether CEP stuff can be used
3)degree of possible change--I've heard that modifying the look does nothing to the properties. Does this mean that AC 7 armor can only be modded such that the torso is still a style with AC 7, or can full plate wearers look naked and robe wearers look like they have full plate because the torso and AC are no longer linked?
Thanks.

You can try out modifying your own armor first, and it will give you an idea of not only the cost, but the DC as well to make the changes. You can dye your armor at any time using the dye kits (and the universal dye kit is the best, but takes some getting used to). The cost on that is (nearly) free--just buy the dye kit.
Okay.... modifying armor. Right click your avatar, left-click on the "west" position (or type 4 on the keypad), and then left-click the "north" position (8 on the keypad). That's the HotU craftable stuff. You get tons of options, and yep.... you can make Armor of the Creator look like a prostitute's outfit, or a cleric's robe. You can change just the arms, or the legs, or add a cape to the armor (that's a neck option). It takes some getting used to, but, play around and have fun. If you ever want to re-set the armor back to its original state, put it in a private chest, close the chest, and re-open and your armor will be back to original.
Once you know what you want, look at the cost and the DC value it's showing. If the DC is over about 26 or 28, you'll need to get someone who can alter the armor for you (just help them modify it). If it's under that, you can probably just boost your INT high enough through rings and such to get it to work. Oh--and if you craft on your own, I suggest making lots of small changes instead of trying to change it all at once.

That's okay, turns out the DC of each check is actually quite low when you make several small modifications separately, and I can afford pricey int-boosting gear.
Um... what happens if you fail the check? Does it damage the item?

From what I've gathered, it doesn't ruin the equipment at all. And it shouldn't. But it's suppose to suck up your gold whether you succeed or fail. However, I've tried it once myself (my skill isn't super good) and I failed. I didn't lose the gold. I never tried it a second time, because it just takes too long to do and I'm kind of a busy dwarf.
Maybe someone else can confirm if it really does suck the gold when you fail and my attempt was just a fluke.

I attempted to change my armour and of course not having the benefit of all your wisdom I tried to modify the entire thing in one go. It got pricey, I had over 2000 gold in my back pocket (must have been the one i modified out), and after I failed (after a lot of careful pondering too might I add) I found myself with only a three figure gold supply on me. That is also the only time I've failed and the last time I tried, so one must assume one of our two attempts was a fluke... so after that I guess I wasn't much help really. Oh well.

Thanks,
