I think there should be more (announced) DM events on the boards (maybe 1 or 2 a week) in addition to the spontaneous ones. That would provide an opportunity to play just like PnP a nice small campaign and would surely also fascinate newer players) Also, the number of unannounced events (as far as i can tell) has gone back as well: there used to be all kinds of races a few weeks back almost thrice a week, and many small plots to involve the players over time (only see karl's plot going on at times now) In addition, ride's friday night arena competitions have been missing for quite a while. it would be nice if another DM could take them over or just announce/promote it. Just do more near the weekend (e.g. fridays and saturdays) to keep the morale up I'd gladly participate in such events if there were any, and I do think that since I joined iof around 5 months back, the number of events has gone back although the number of DMs has gone up.

Now your making me feel bad The old days... 1 event a week... oh how I miss them. Well, I have to write them at work now, but at the moment we are writing the IRS/TAX logic for returns next year and we're coming down to the wire. In fact, I probably shouldn't even be writing this =-) Anyway, if I can get a space to write one here, I'll perform it at home. I do feel good they are missed, to a certain extent... its like... telling me it was important to someone.. so that's really motivating!

Nat... how about forget all that extra stuff and get the tournement thing going... Make a new roster to reflect the changes in people coming/going. I would *love* to participate in that. ;D

I suppose were someone to do that, I would bewilling to keep the data tabulation / stats, providing it was PMed tome or posted somewhere. Personally, the tourney doenst interest me alot, but I think alot of people like it alot. Events are more important IMO.

Well it doesnt have to be a big castille tourney with prizes.
The ones ride used to run where Whillem Arena ones which were just for fun most of the time, and if there were prizes (seldom), they were only small things.
I'm sure those tourneys are popular especially with lvl38+ but also they are interesting at mid lvl ranges: you may think thats boring, but actually a match between lets say 2 lvl18s is very challenging and fun. Group battles have space too, and sometimes monsters can be spawned (and if necessary DM controlled) to test a few skills.
Other than that, Events for low and mid lvl players are needed the most, since lvling is hardest there and people can have a lot of fun seeing how they are limited and have to figure another way than just bashing their way through.
lvl 35+ quests are nice too, but they usually end up as a battle zone between PCs and warped or drow...Although some interesting things can be worked out there too.
I think for events, although there is a minor xp reward, a reward for best ideas and rp should also be given to players participating, that does not have to be a big bonus, but a small one would encourage rp and partywork.

We are a couple DM's short (r1de and Getty are away), so that will hurt this spectrum to an extent. I have done at least one event a week in the past 3 weeks (1 per week), but I suppose I could throw a few more in. They would have to be spontaneous as homework is aplenty during the weekdays and am reluctant to make any scheduled events on weekdays.

I'm not saying that formal events are not cool (because I personally think they're great), but dont forget that just because the DMs are not running anything is no reason you cannot makeup your own plots and schemes. Any DM that is on (and not too busy) will likely be happy to give you an assist with any dramatic flare, monster drops, npcs, etc... to flesh it out a bit. Some of the most fun I've had here has been around plots created by players (special thanks to Mys and JK in that department )

Agreed that player plots can be a good source as well, however, the difference between those and fromala ccounced events, is that you may have troubles getting involved in a player plot in the first place; it is way less organized most of the time; time. With formal events, a certain time is set and everyone can participate, making the entire thing more fair and fun.
Problem with player plots is oftentimes, that players may not always be as imaginative as DMs and may not be able to get many to participate or no DM is around to aid in some things.
Events run by DMs, both unannounced and announced, are imho better thus and really will draw more players.
as a side note, i would like to add, that it would be nice if there was something like an OOC placate near the WS starting area that tells new players that they should not hesistate asking a DM or player for help getting into fredian and learning about the place. Encouraging them with a warm welcome will make people want to stay.

The bottom line is that we do the best we can. I get little time these days, and with my mother ill I cannot truly set an announced event time and be sure I will be there. Additionally I have posted announced events in the past and ended up with only one or two people signing up or half of the players flaking and not showing up. I prefer to run events as I see people on the server that fit one of my event ideas.

Placard / Sign : Makz this is a really good point - I dont know if there is a reason whe we dont have that, but when I was looking for a new home a year ago, that was usually what I looked for to find out the rules. Granted they are in alot of areas here, but it really isnt a bad idea. Plus it could possibly be used as a location to keep players apprised of upcoming events.
DM vs Player Events: Yeah, no one is arguing that DM events arent more applicable for the masses. Player events tend to get more bogged down, and are by nature limited in certain fasions. At the same time they frequently lead to much better RP than DM ones and a better sence of personal history. Just pointing it out as a valid alternative that some people do not really think about.
