*sighs* After the absolute disaster of the attempted arena tournament, regarding 'what is allowed' and 'whats not allowed' I have opened up this thread.
During a rather heated discussion at the team arena OOC with a few players a lot of issues regarding spellcasters and items arose....what should be allowed in the team battles, and what should be banned from them....? I would like input from all who would like to take part in a future event me and canker would like to plan. (better this time...well, it cant be worse can it?)
My own view is that NOTHING should be banned except Raising players that are already down...once your down you stay down.
Please...respond....i need info!

Hey preedy,
First of all thanks to Canker and Karl for *trying* to pull something like that off. I would have walked off muttering had I to put up with even a fraction of that.
Okay, my opinion... quitcherbeetchin for starters. (Not you Karl and Canker, the rest of us!) When you are playing in a tournament that *someone else* has gone to the time and effort to put together, you play by their rules or you go home. Got it?
That being said, rules need to concretely be decided before hand. One of the problems with the tourney the other day was arranging groups. It seemed to alternate between players grouping and judges grouping. Should we do this again I would heartily recommend that all participants quietly and politely respect the wishes of those who are providing the purse. That being said, the judges need to have their act together before hand too;-)
What is wrong with attempting a tournament where the rules are maybe a little different than what you are used to? If anything I think this would provide an interesting challenge. Perhaps no healing potions, or no summons, or a time limit, or... you get the idea, sky's the limit.
So, sorry preedy, but I'm not recommending any rules, just standard behaviour of conduct for participants. What, is the big tough spellcaster afraid of not going in without buffs? Is the big burly fighter guy scared of a mage with timestop? Get over it folks and embrace the challenge wontcha? Let's see what your PCs are really made of:-)
And this healthy dose of tough love was brought to you by... well actually it was brought to you by the fact that Hanah hasn't had her coffee yet >.<

Yeah the Arena idea the plan was a great idea. Problem is once ya started too many hands in the pot you have to know what your plans and expectations are and follow through. If its good vs evil pull em up and let em go three lowest vs three lowest or whatever nothing is fair just let head roll. Keep it moving.
Or pick a threesome you would like to see fight, I mean after all they are there to fight right? Just when your doing it be clear line em up and let em go its an arena after all.
Youll get it when running something remember some will enjoy and appreciate your effort and some will complain no matter what you do so just follow through with the spirit in which your doing it and most of all have fun with it.
I think you had a good plan but again it would be impossible to make it even or fair let em roll line em up and let em go again. or even say teams maximum of 85lvls of characters. something like that would cap and then everyone knows how to pick their allies
That would alleviate trouble on your part. So just a small thought. If you do it again just try not to loose control to sensless debating that drags forever and set you standard.

What, is the big tough spellcaster afraid of not going in without buffs? I know I am sometimes lol Seriously tho, Thanks to Karl and Canker for even attempting to set this up (sorry Karl I did not see this thread b4). There was massive amounts of whining that night. I know I got a lil defensive even, sorry. I do agree and agreed then that the rules should be set before hand (if any, other than don't raise dead combatants, but that seems kind of obvious) and not changed by players because they're saves for that particular spell/feat/weapon whatever are crap.... Mack hits me with his dev crit and I go down no matter what buffs I have up, don't hear me whining about that, I just need to find a way to fight it. We had alot of ideas that night, some good, some bad as far as the "rules" of engagement go, but I think hanah said it all, everyone just has to chill out and play by the rules (whatever they may be). I wonder what some of you do in Vegas when you lose, do you run up to the cage demanding your money back because the house has an unfair advantage? and besides the arena is always there so if there is disagreement with someone you can always come back later and "settle" it.... but don't stop the nights activities. "two men enter, one man leaves...." "two men enter, one man leaves...." sorry that was a horrible movie, but I had to... lol

Well I missed the 'discussion' but try these rules on for on for size...
1. No Buffs, I don't care if you walk around all day with XYZ spell on. It's irrelevant what you would have on normally, this is an area battle. When a caster buffs that's the equivalent to a fighter doing damage. If the fighter can't attack yet, you can't cast. There are ways to buff during combat, IE while said fighter is closing the distance...
2. No spell limits, anything goes once the flag drops. Would a figher limit themself to say, a +4 weapon, just because? No, so why would a spell caster not use certian spells. There are defenses to everything. Not everyone has these available, that's why some classes beat others hands down. The counter to that is a nice mixed group of 3.
3. Time limit to stop endless fights (couple of minutes?). I'm not sure how an endless fight could happen, but maybe it does. Maybe limit heal poitions to andthing but heal. But I'm generally against limiting combat choices.

So noted....i'm even thinking of allowing raises...that would make the fights VERY interesting...hmm...

those sound fine to me, but can *everyone* live with them, that's the question. Not even live with them but just accept them, even after they get badly beaten? and I think raises would make for some nice fights, but the consensus that night seemed to be that no one wanted that. I really don't think I would have a problem with any rules, if I felt that I couldn't live with them I would just not play in those matches (or figure out a way to clean up by using the rules against ya lol )

Hey, I should have replied to this earlier but.. Eh.
The rules are explained on the signs that say 'Please Examine' or 'Examine me' (etc) and they are the basic guidlines. It also notes that any additional terms should be decided and agreed before any match begins to avoid disputes. RP is of course the main feature of Fredian, but strictly, you cannot break the rules because 'it would be ooc not to' since they are there to make the matches as even as possible.
Further more, you can of course bend the rules, BUT ONLY IF YOU AGREE WITH THE OPOSITION ON IT FIRST!
Hope this helps, and hope you know who I am otherwise you might think Im some loony who wants to get some attention.. Well maybe I am but, thats not the point.

I know Dauntless....but this is a discussion for a proper team based tournament using the arena...But I think that now i have had time to think about it, you are actually right. I think that the rules for the team arena should stand as they are.....All i need to think about now is how to set the whole thing up without getting another big mess!

Well I could make a few suggestions, and if Makz likes then I could perhaps script em to the area...
Perhaps an announcer who shouts out that a tournament is going to start in so many minutes and for anyone who want to join in comes. I would suggest that teams, and terms are sorted out before hand as have already said, and I also think that if the teams wre balenced, it would help give less grounds to any arguments that may arrise.

Ok...I have a general idea for what the rules (or lack of them) are going to be...all i need now is to speak canker, and we can get the ball rolling....

Dauntless, is there a "scorekeeper" built into the arena? I was in there with Mys and we were try to get the moderator guy to start our match for us,. I asked him to start the match and he told me to go back to my place, which I did. He never said anything after that.... is he supposed to count down or something? do both teams have to tell him that they are ready or something? Great Preedy, sounds good, can't wait to have a match again (might even get in on them "no-spells" fights this time too )

Hey ride, that is something that needs to be fixed, he is supposed to say '3,2,1,GO!' but the script is a bit messed up. If Makz wants me to fix it he can talk to my new char (Fading Dawncrow) and I'll see what I can do, aswell as perhpas adding thise scoreboard idea.
