For those of you interested, here is the interview questions and my answers for NWvault sent to me today by Maximus from IGN nwvault. Pictures will be on the webpage of it, when it gets on there also.
1) Could you give our readers some personal background on yourself.
I am 44 yrs old this year, probably making me one of the older people that
started a PW, and have a background mostly in music and drawing from very
young my work can be heard at my website at www.castille.us . I
started dabbling in computers about 20 yrs ago and properly when I met my
wife (some of you know as Salandra Nightingale). I had never been into RP
games that much, and certainly not D&D PnP, so this PW has been quite an
interesting success for me in some ways. I do have a 5 yr experience history
however in running a BBS ( bulletin board system) back in the 90 to mid
90's. That gave me the interest in a user based system access, and I was
heavily involved in a number of amatuer mail networks as a NODE and also in
Area and Regional admin roles. The BBS was very successful for what was in
the end a 2 line system with around 1000 users regurally logging in and out
24 hrs a day, which I knew most of from chatting with them. I started with
NWN after having played all the Baldurs Gate, Torments, Diablo's etc over
the years, as soon as NWN came out, and started a server up within the first
3 mths of it's release.
2) How big is your team and who are some of the key members?
My team is a core of 4 people with an extended group now of around 11
people. The key people are myself, I made all the user
interfaces/main/NPC/quests & areas of IoF other than the Pantheon, Jail,
slave pit & planar crossing ( addicted2rpg, my head Dev) and some player
homes submitted by the players and fixed somewhat in some cases to fit and
or be used. Salandra Nightingale, no one will ever see her about, but, my
wife is the one behind the main systems for the MySQL database locaters and
storage systems, and some other important systems, including of course our
re-write of ATS. Addicted2rpg, he came on board I think around October of
2003, he does a lot of our newer scripting and or unique work, ie: jail /
knight system & slavery system. Silentus, this is one of our leading long
term players and takes care of my forums for me, keeping them both looking
good and up to date for players to get important information well. And of
course my DM's including cartoonic (my son) who without, Fredian would not
be as good as it is. We also have recently brought in Samius Maximus as a
Dev for IoF, and he is now working on fixing his new PGS into IoF and a new
subraces system for us.
3) Your Persistent World is called "Island of Fredian" was recently
inducted into our Hall of Fame. Could you give us an overview of what it's
all about and the unique setting you have.
It's about Freedom, mostly, it is a world setting where the Island was
actually part of a continent called Nardiar about 800 yrs ago a reigning
King, Carralus and his mage Reman brewed magic that split the continent off
at it's northern tip taking it and a chain of Islands off through a planar
rift to reside in a kind of bubble in space which allows many in, but none
out. IoF is a PW Story/RP server with a twist, there is no HCR system, no
rest restrictions, none of the players are forced to play a particular way,
but are encouraged to follow courtesy and some common sense rules put in
place for them to ALL enjoy the world created for them. King Wend is a
central figure of Fredian, and many of the plots and the new generations of
Fredian know of him, and of course Reman is still around, when you find him,
as is the ghost of Carralus, somewhere. Because it is a PW, a lot of what
the players do effect its direction and ongoing story, my community of
players in a LOT of ways also make our world unique.
4) What are some of the main features that stand out from other worlds?
That is a tough one to answer, as it is subjective, and to say anything
myself could be taken as bragging?... however, my feeling is having played a
number of other worlds, and having run someone elses for a while, the main
things are these, to me, good planning and execution of base systems and
areas. Continuity of mapping, places all make sense. Well scripted quests
that not only tell a story but get the players to learn their way around. No
HCR or rest retrictions, but we have things like, you can slip on the ice,
and be damaged by the cold ( thanks to Deva Winbloods systems) gas damage in
sewers, heat damage in deserts ( Deva's work again) and of course, NPC
activities which I am on the beta team for and have used in IoF since the
first day to make IoF more alive, my NPC's walk around areas, talk, sing,
pickpocket etc. IoF is about making the players feel they are in a real
place, and that they have an effect on it, and I suppose I can't really
ommit the inclusion of our re-write of ATS, this is the original version of
ATS/Salandra's crafting at I am pretty sure most complete and up to date
useage.
5) How strict are you on Roleplaying?
Not really at all, my DM's have been told from day one that Nazi tactics on
my server are out! I hate that stuff, it's about having fun, the only
restriction I have on players is not having them walk in on a RP session and
act like clowns if they are not Rping.. other than that... pretty well free
for all! no griefing others is a courtesy thing.
6) Could you describe some of the activities that players can do on your
world.
Crafting, best system, least lag and most useful full items selection out
there.
Sit around in a tent with a campfire around the world talking.
Explore a world covering 380 + areas, including snow covered mountains,
deserts, thick forests and vast farmlands. Use of CEP has made some of these
areas VERY unique.
25+ persistent quests WITH journal updating as you do them similar to the
OC, and reset each at 7 real days so that players can continue to use them
as a source of experience should they want to.. makes no sense from a
RP/story avenue, but has its use and I prefer it that way myself.
Fight everything from a humble fire beetle to a raging Warped creature ( I
first made these, and are probably still in use in a lesser form than my new
ones on World of Talus)
There are many unique creatures on Fredian, too many to list, but challenges
exist all the way up to and including a level 40 PC.
Slavery system - own your own PC.
Jail/Knight system, those that are Knights have a lasso to send players to
Jail, it should be noted a number of my Knights have become DM's over time,
as I observe their abilities to handle others in sometimes frayed
situations.
Player guild system, make a guild, assign ranks, have wars etc...
Player homes for those that qualify over time and involvment.
Persistent player item storage.
Subraces.
These are just some of what we offer and more is coming.
