If it is an issue of needing to be low on ranks in tanning well I got fledgling tanner that will surely ruin hides regularly for you.

Your skill needs to be in red/blue/light blue. Occasionally you will fail and produce a ruined hide. Which you can still work with. You need to be pretty high in the skill to even have small white show up. So a fledgling won't do. For instance, I have bear in green and don't have white as an option.
