This thought came to me when I was reading what can players do to help by elith. This probably falls there but I wanted it seperate and just every bodies road map.
I have on numerous occasions noticed new names just a wandering. So I have, usually OOC, given a tour of the main places. In the interest of exploring I have limited the tour route.
Generally from west styne to lower fredian kehar, "touch the stone", then shards "heres 2000 gp to get started", then to northe styne, "there is the temple, you would have found that sooner than later!", "There is the castle of the dead king", then what evers above that (brain cramp here), "here is the mage shop", "here is the, 1 minute (expertly and impressively dispatches the zombies) trade guild", " here is the other trader", top of screen open doors , "that way is the wilds", around corner, "that way is styne village". "OK your on your way need anything find me and please IC only."
I have taken this route numerous times it only takes a few minutes and I'm sure is very helpfull.
What my question is
What is your prefered tour route and how can mine be better without giving to little or too much ?.
If you never gave a tour then you are missing out and I have to say it was done for me and I never forgot!

One thing Vugor has done a number of time is an IC mutually benificial tour. Vugor breaks flowers with 1 hit (as nugatively buffed as he can manage) subsequently he needs collecters. I on occasion have picked up a newb IC and walked them to the temple, portal to E Styne Woods, E Styne, Steppes (touch the KeHaar), Lower mountains, Southern farmlands pointing out what kind of territory lies a region or 2 each direction. Finally I pony up some gold in exchange for a few bags of flowers and send them KeHaar-ing back to the Steppes and back to civilization to the West (sometimes bring them in the mines too).
While this is not the most exciting tour, it gives them a taste of Portals, KeHaars, City, Plains, mountains, Cold Effects, Ice effects, a small creature assortment, crafting and a concept of the huge scale of the island. In the end everyone gets something they want and I never even need to go OOC if I dont wish to.

Like the two of you I have given very limited tours. Mine are mostly of the Styne areas only and then after making sure they have a warm cloak and an idea of how to find a wilderness area I send them on their way with a few directions and warnings. I've always tried to keep it IC for flavor.

My tours always include the mayor's wife's quest, aside from the things right around West Styne. Hit the Lower Fredain Forest Ke'Haar Stone, and off to the North so they can get an idea of where the Temple of Tyr is, the other various shops in Inner Styne Castle, etc. I try to take them through Styne Village, so they experience the cold and understand that you can't roam freely in the snow. Once up to Styne Harbor, I have them hit that Ke'Haar Stone, and we continue up to the dockmaster's place. Once they have the package, we both warp together back to the Lower Fredian Forest (and this is the first time I explain how it works, and how the magic behind it can be rather questionable, so don't complain, etc, etc).
To me, this helps because the mayor's wife's quest is one of the first quests people get on Fredian, and they just haven't a clue where to go. Styne Harbor is a heck of a walk if you're new, and I don't feel that directions are good enough because there's lots of ways to get all screwed up.
Once I set them loose, I try to give them a clear understanding that they can feel free to send me tells OOC about anything they want, including any questions they have. It doesn't take long to find out if they are the hack'n'slash type or the strict rp type--and if they are hack'n'slash, I try and get them to a place to "train" for their first few levels. I don't see a point to forcing a newbie that just wants to fight have to go through all the perceived pain of rp just to ask "where do I start?". I also let them know that once they start to make progress (level 6), they are on their own, and should really make their own friends, and contact me IC only.
Maybe this is being a bit too nice or soft on the newbies, but I remember when I started, a gal was learning to weaponcraft and gave me enough weapons to get me through level 20. She also answered all my silly OOC questions that I had, and even took me on a tour of her own. How cool was that? I still look back on that with fond memories, and honestly--that's probably the biggest reason I'm still playing on Fredian.
Maybe it's not so much important how you give a tour, or play friendly with the newbies, as much as it's important to just try and help them out.

No hazing?? Ok kid, this is the planar crossing. We're going to tie a blindfold on, and you are going to hit a pinatta. Just walk down this bridge.... *turns other direction and bolts* just kidding! You guys are really nice. I remember Frost and Mack had that bear pelt thing going too. It is pretty neat see the noble side of this little community. I have no idea where you all came from, but you just started logging in one day and doing all these things for others That's pretty cool

It impresses me that there are people who would give out this tour. What a community!
It inspired me to do the same, with a slightly different route. Get the missing miner quest, east through the mines, east to East Styne, north to the snow, talk about the portal, talk about the cold, east to the Steppes, then keep going north to Styne harbour. Well, that was the plan. The char I was escorting died by slipping over on the ice and breaking his neck. Oh, well, time for a lesson in death. I portalled to the Temple of Tyr to meet him.
Then he got a good lesson about the power of the gods. He went to the donation box, was rude, got killed. Twice. Learn this, pal - in this land the gods bite.
Cheers Craig
