i am just wondering how meny ways " tells " are used on the island , and the ways people use them ooc as well as rp ?. basicly asking how many use the "ooc:" or "// " in tells or do they just use it back and forth without marking, i have seen many styles and i'm just basicly after who uses what how?. thanx AnoM

I personally use them as OOC only and dont mark my tells with any ooc marker.
In some situations they are IC but only if arranged with the person that I am "telling"

well i do mark as to not cause confusion, but i prefer the good old ahem i mean new rounded brackets "))" when i tell out of character...and they always go at the end of what i'm saying out of character. I don't go for any of that "//" or "ooc:" nonsense before what i write...lol And sometimes if i'm not feeling too lazy i might put two "((" brackets before what i type as well. So if i don't follow this pattern then i'm being ludicrous! Which can only be caused by someone brainwashing me or cloning me... ;D I know putting the symbols is considered unecessary for tells because you shouldn't really rp in a tell unless it's agreed to so therefore they should be out of character...but old habits die hard, well it's not even an old habit, cause it's a habit i still do lol

I only use tells as ooc. Most people I talk to in rp in tells tell me to speak ooc but most times even though it is ooc I saw it in a way that is supposed to be on the fence teetering back and forth. Not typically one or the other so it keeps em from telling me speak in character or don't speak in character.
example: Why must you persue this beast we are getting nowhere, MOVE ON!
not the best example but only one I can think of at the momment.

I always regard tells as OOC, unless it is clear for both they are used IC... But I (almost) never use ((, //, ooc:, or )) in tells. Sometimes I use Tells IC just for convenience. Like when there is heavy talking or crafting around you, the green tells are much easier to spot.
In fact I regard all communication not in Talk or whisper mode as OOC...but if my party uses partychat as an IC communication mode, I will use // to make ooc comments on the party-channel. It's not a rigid rule, just a rule of thumb.

IC tells are do not make sense unless you character has telepathic powers.

I always pictured in character tells as if the player was sending a messenger. So when I talk regular in the game and tell people to tell me for whatever reason to keep it in character I tell them to send a messenger to me.

Heh, I have a crystal ball in my home, so I use that for telling...

I'm not ultra-serious about tells. I typically consider them always OOC and never bother putting markers, unless the person I'm sending a message to uses them habitually (I just try and mimic whatever style, as a matter of courtesy).
My personal usage is this: If I'm starting the conversation via tells, I always make it obvious (in the wording) that it's OOC. Doing rp in tells just seems.... forced, and rather weird. If someone else contacts me with a tell and tries to make it IC, then I try and work with it. I rarely make a big deal of doing rp in tells unless it's someone that really should know better, or unless my character probably wouldn't care for the other character. One of my characters has been getting rather odd and angry, so the idea of yelling at someone over a tell seems poor. (messengers, on the other hand, might suffer some bruising...)

My rules for tells is IC only. My rules for OOC in party or talk or whisper is completely dictated by the amount of keystrokes I have to press. Not because I am overly lazy just that my typing is terrible and terribly slow. So OOC: = 4 keystrokes and a shift key ooc: = 4 keystrokes (( = 2 keystokes and a shift key // = 2 keystrokes and we have a winner! preferably / but that is frowned upon Obviously there will never be the ending // unless it is forgotten in the begining and usually comes after I have fixed all typos reread what I am going to send and hit enter Then usually you get the obligatory // in the next line of text because I just plain forgot them originally. I use tells for OOC, but I do make subtle hints that this will lead into IC via "Messengers with wings " .

disclaimer: This view is from me as a player point of view (we have no policy about this kind of thing). IC tells are do not make sense unless you character has telepathic powers. 0.02 There are some creative methods for using IC tells. Magic users have a variety methods, such as whispering winds, magic mouths, and telepathy, which wouldn't work with 90% of PCs because of immunity to mind affecting spells. A IC tell may go like this (I specifiy IC tells with IC:) IC: you sense the wind pick up a little and faintly, but audibly hear "blah, blah." However, the fighters/rogues are not to be left out. There is always a messenger bird, or an actual messenger. Heck, use smoke signals... An example might go like this. IC: as you are traveling a bird begins to circle above you, after a few seconds, it swoops down and drops a note which reads "blah blah." The bird waits for a reply (or not). Just be creative.
