One simple question: is it possible to create items (bags) with the sewing kit straight from prepared skins? Or do I have to transform the skins into cloth first? Whenever I use the sewing kit and choose the option "Create small bag" (the option is blue by the way), it always says that I am missing something. What am I missing (the point, perhaps)? My tanning skills are well over 100 at the moment.

Did you buy small patterns, tanners must use patterns.
Also, small black hides, or black hides in general, or not currently used.

Tanning is really only a subskill of tailoring, but it does allow you to craft bags. Better bags are craftable in tailoring however. Unlike tailored bags, tanned bags can be made from medium as well as small & large hides. If memory serves, mining bags use tanned hides, normal bags use hardend hides (in tailoring, it is all cloth). All bags created with tanning require the hides (as mentioned), a corresponding sized bag pattern and the sewing kit. The patterns and hides get consumed in the process.
Hope that clarifies it for you.

Thanks for the reply, guys. I have tried to create a small bag using the sewing kit, the small bag pattern and a hardened small and medium hide. I haven't tried to create a bag with only a tanned (or cured) hide. I thought that I could only use the hide when it was hardened. Anyway... I will try this later today. Thanks again. Update: silly me... it seems that I needed to have two small hardened hides in my inventory to create one small bag. Finally I am in business!

Cool, I was wondering about this for a while. So I might as well use those harden skins, not having them clog up my private chest holders.
