Are +1, +2 and +3 gems used in axe crafting real items that can be found somewhere in the game or do they refer to the first three mined gems?

All things used in crafting are available in shops merchants inventory or less conveniently monster hides. So go explorer. Talk to NPC's. Find the hidden shopkeep. And kill some of the overwhelming number of monsters that plague our little island. FYI: The gems you seek can be found in each of these specific locations. , Nah go explore.

There are shop(s) that sell them, they are not monster drops. Only the renown items require special monster drops IIRC, and even some of those are in shops (balor's blood for ex. isn't dropped by a balor, it's purchased).
Try asking in game to find the specific locations...

Found them. It seems strange that the +1 and +2 had the same price but the +3 was 4 times as much.
I had run into a few too many cases where areas go from fairly easy monsters to impossiable (or howlers) with out any real warning. In another season <lvl 15> I will be able to use protection from death magic and feel safer to do more scouting.
Dog (looking for a median between the 50 & 500 exp monsters)

Without warning, you leveled right? That's the warning. Consider items for immunities, not sure what the required level is, but I'm pretty sure you can get death immunity before 15th. Just need to find the right vendor, again a search. I'll likely be on tonight, and a good wizard knows things. Well maybe not good, but good, you know what I mean. Well maybe *you* don't, but some do. Well maybe not just *some* but whatever. ^.^

Perhaps "highly skilled wizard" would be more fitting than "good wizard"

More like:
"While exploring a new area just two days travel from my new home on these islands, I came across a couple of easily dispatched bandits, one healthy brown bear. A little way down the road near the South coast, without warning, a very very strong Giant Blue Crab attacked."
FYI, I found that item that didn't require 15 seasons. I was glad that I had been keeping my training up in lockpicking or I would have missed the man. It seems strange for a shop keeper to lock his door when he is in the shop. Maybe it was the time of day? I loose sense of time underground and had been lost in those caves for quite a while. I will have to return once I stop at the bank for some additional items.

It's locked for a reason, explore the area a bit more and talk to some folks. They might explain why. Oh, that kind of unexpected encounter... Yeah, be careful. Fortunatly, you should have a haste item by then, and escape shouldn't be too difficult. Can't tell you the number of times I have run from combat, just ask anyone who has PvPed me. Few get the satisfaction of dropping me. Making me run, sure, that can be done... *hugs time stop spell* BTW Dog, thanks for posting/asking the way you did, instead of "where is XYZ" edit: Not a good wizard eh? *begins casting some large vicious spell with an unpronouncable name and mean damage*
