I just mastered jewelcrafting (1000 - woohoo) the other day and last night was my first attempt at making a myrkandite diamond ring. I noticed that it was in red even though I had a 1000 in the skill. Took almost 100 diamonds and over 100 myrk to squeeze out 1 myrk diamond ring. Don't know if this was intentional or not but just wanted to bring it up if it was not known.
FYI,

It is intended to be hard, but, not that hard I'll check the high end of it, it MAY be due to material cost, and not actual item... but then it should effect top end of weaponcrafting the same... hmmm. I'll check anyway. Makz.

This *SHOULD* be ok now, I adjusted the gem base requirements, and the higher than normal setting on crafted diamond.

It's likely that you have too many craftable resources on you. If you do, you will get an not get an error, but will fail A LOT. Like almost all the time (1 in a 100 sounds about right).
Empty your stores of resources. I had the same problem when I got close to finishing jewlery. Too many different resources hose the scripts, when you have lots of ore, normal and perfect gems it fails.
Makz, this likely isn't a #s issue with the scale, the rings are very craftable at red, you make them just as often as any other red item.

Actually, while that is VERY GOOD ADVICE Phoenix, that specific instance was a problem. I have never successfully made a diamond myrk ring (including trying it totally naked with nothing on me but a few items for crafting them).
Please note that Phoenix observation is accurate for many items though - some things do not work well when you have a boatload of craftable resouces. Some of them give you errors, some are silent. If you think youre failing too much or getting errors on attempts, losing the stockpile of craftables on your character may help. Tanning is particularly troublesome - has issues if you have flowers on you as well as if you do not have open inventory space available.
Makz and Addicted have fixed MANY MANY MANY problems with ATS, its extra add-on crafts, and how craftable deal with PWs, but there were and still are problems with the base code that remain elusive.

yep yep yep. In a nut shell, if you have too many crafting components in your inventory when you craft, you are likely to create a TMI (Too Many Instructions) and fail in your craft attempt. please MAKE SURE that you keep your inventory trimmed when crafting, especially those Ultra-high end items (like those new arrows, for example). Failing in this way isnt very nice, and I have swore a few times when it has happened. Just keep your inventory managed, and it wont be a problem

Yep, just like Silentus said, that was a specific problem and Makz already fixed it. (Yay!). Those myrk diamond rings were a bear. Now they show up as dark blue. Still hard to make but not as impossible as it was.
