Dearest Mom,
I am sorry I have to write you this letter, but I fear that I may never see you again. I do not know much about this island on which I find myself now. But there are some things which I need to tell you and I can only hope this letter will find its way to you someday.
I wish to apologize for being such a disappointment to you. I know that it seems all that you hold dear is ripped away from you. From even before I was born, and you meet father due to the spell gone awry. There were at least a few happy times you spent with Dad on the Celestial plane, before the wizards council found you and brought you back All that you have ever been able to keep from that time you spent there was me. I know what a great burden that must have been for you to have a half-breed child like myself. And then I didn’t even pay attention well to the lessons you taught me. As you tried to teach me the ways of wizardry, and I would just keep wandering off into the woods to play with the animals.
I have learned some of the ways of magic now. I have studied under a Grand Druid for a time, before I found myself here on this island. I have even learned how to turn myself into some of the creatures which the wizard’s council summoned. My studies are going well, even if they are not in the direction you had wished for me.
I am still not quite sure how I got here. I was participating in a druid ritual of the forest, intended to prevent fires from spreading thru the forest. All the local druids were in attendance. As we neared the end of the ceremony, I was supposed to bring an artifact to my master at the center of the ring. I am not quite sure what occurred, but I think it might have something to do with my half breed blood, causing a disruption in the spell. I woke up alone and on this island, though I do not know where it is in relation to home.
I did recently encounter an odd creature which you might find interesting! It is a creature known as a devourer. It told me that it had been created by a wizard. The poor creature was quite unhappy and had run away from others of its kind since it did not wish to control the minds of humans. Many of the local villagers here were quite scared and wished to slay the poor creature. I have safely taken it away from town where it can be kept safe. I visit with him from time to time.
Oh, and Brownie is still with me and doing well. You told me that he would never make it when I found the lost bear cub, but he has managed to stick with me through all that I have been through. Brownie said I should tell you “hi” and to give you a fish from him.
I did want to let you know that I am safe and happy here. Someday, I hope to be able to see you again. I fear that it may not be possible. The fates have been cruel to you I know, but please know that I am happy and that I love you! Please do not have the wizard’s council search for me. The methods they use can be so cruel sometimes, as you well know! I will continue to work hard and maybe someday you won’t have to be ashamed of me.
Lexa
Lexa rolls up the letter and places it in a bottle. After a moment of reflection, she corks the bottle and tosses it into the sea.
