As one they looked over their shoulders at their mother and waved. Standing at the base of the steps cut into the living rock of the cliff she looked happy and sad and tired all at once to them. Mostly, she looked lonely.
Inside the cool of the sanctum, they both bowed obeisance to the altars and headed into the living room, settling on their favorite couches and looking at each other in the silent communication that they had shared since birth.
"Brother, she looks..." Ziya broke off in a whisper.
"I know, sis," he replied with an edge in his voice.
"It is time, at least for me," she said softly glancing at Selar curled asleep in the bathing pool.
Nodding gravely, Gierdo looked thoughtful, "I am going to continue my work with Auntie. I know that is not the path for you, sis, but I haven't learned all she has to teach, and with Raella working under Uncle Ore's tutelage, she would be at loose ends without at least one of us."
Ziya drew the small amulet out of her shirt and held it up in the light as her brother did the same. The lights played off of them and then sparked to meet in a soft glowing arc between the two. For several long moments, the twins held each others' eyes and slowly their smiles grew.
Arcala padded out into the living room breaking the tableau. Gierdo reached over and gave the old wolf a quick scratch. The giant canine regarded them both with pale yellow eyes that bespoke far more intelligence than any wolf had a right to show. With a slow deliberateness, Arcala winked at them and padded out the door and into the desert night.
Selar raised her tiny draconic head for a moment to watch, and then tucked it back under her wing pretending to sleep and thinking how she would help them work around Li.
