Caiaphas Genharadar
Halflings are known for being clever and resourceful survivors. This one looks like he survived by simply killing anything that got in his way.
He is tall and bulky, quite strong. His hair is green, his skin tanned and weathered brown. The expression in his face is one of hardness. His voice is pitched low. He speaks fast and swears a lot.
He covers himself in steel armour and carries two long knives and a mace.
He’s not good-looking but not bad-looking either. Just average.
Call me Cai.
I hate this place. I hate the cold, the snow. Now, there’s a word I had to learn - snow. I come from an island nation in the tropics. Sun, sand, surf. For fun we used to swim from island to island as kids. I’ve heard sailors say that the water here will kill you in minutes. This idea of frozen water falling from the sky is just wrong. Before I got here I never even knew water could freeze!
A paradise, you say? Well, sure, the weather was warm, food was plentiful, stuff like that. We did share the islands with a Minotaur nation, however, and they didn’t like to share. Skirmishing with them kept us fit and strong. Life was hard, yeah, but pretty good.
So how did I get here? I dunno. I was on a ship, a trading run to one of our far islands. Four days at sea a big storm comes up, a funny storm. Cold, cold like we’d never felt, strange coloured lightning, you name it. While I was trimming the sails a boom swung round, hit me in the head, knocked me overboard.
Next thing I know I woke up in a bed in what I learn is West Styne. Wren Havell, the mayor, tells me that there are many like me who come to this island and that there is no escape. I didn’t believe him.
I wandered all over the island, killing things. Secretly I hoped that some would kill me but every time they did, something brought me back. One day I found a building in the desert called The Pantheon and I found out who was bringing me back. One statue talked to me, offered me a deal. He would keep bringing me back and would teach me new skills if I would become his champion. I agreed. Now I am a Champion of Jotham¹. I vowed to take the fight to evil and chaos, talking to them in the only language they understand - pain and suffering and death.
I paid Galia Havell, the mayor’s wife and the schoolteacher, to teach me to read. I read books I found all over the island. Lots of stories about people getting here, none about escaping. I still don’t believe it. I think that birdman in the city to the West has answers. I’ll have to go talk to him again.
To be honest to myself, I’m not sure I want to leave. I’ve been here what seems like years now. I have a God. Maybe I’ll find a wife and have a life as well. Who knows? Maybe even the snow will become bearable?
